His Dark Materials AU. Our heroes make an electrum spyglass...then have to figure out how to get it to do something useful. Lights in Niton Canyon lead to the discovery of an unnatural phenomenon with Rusakov particles. An element from the Lyra-and-Pan stories turns out to be less fictional than assumed. And Carlos' research objectivity may be starting to slip.
( But no, the data will still be useful even if Khoshekh's not here, and Carlos can't object just because he has a personal agenda. Having a personal agenda is not part of being an experimental theologian. )
