A roundup of the non-superpowered good guys. They're the ones the Sailor Senshi are sworn to protect, but it goes both ways: our heroines never would have made it without the help.

This covers all the named characters who are neither royalty (i.e., senshi and their relatives) nor evil. Recurring ones have their own descriptions; one-offs are mentioned as part of somebody else's. Sailor Moon | The Xyll Saga: Timeline

I don't remember the logic behind much of anything in this timeline. Probably most of the dates were handwaved. And in retrospect, I'm not a fan of the whole "Earth is the origin of humanity in the SM universe" thing. For one thing, the plethora of other mostly-humanoid species — e.g. Mau cats, Coronis crows, Xenian Flowers, Makaiju space elves, possibly Kakyuu & the Starlights — suggests that there's a galactic template going around, with no indication that humanity has to be its ur-example. (My bets are on Guardian Cosmos.)

You won't need to read the timeline before tackling the story, and in fact probably shouldn't, since the spoilers are pretty blatant. (The date range sweeps from the beginning of humanity to Crystal Tokyo.) All you need to know going in is that the action takes place while the Silver Millennium is still thriving.
