Title: He Says He Is An Experimental Theologian (13/?)
Fandom: Welcome to Night Vale, His Dark Materials
Characters/Pairings: Carlos/other, family, ???
Rating: T
Disclaimer/warnings: See story masterpost.
His Dark Materials AU. Carlos in Narragansett, part two. Some personal experimentation yields definite results...definite sexy results. But it isn't all sunshine and rainbows, because all the talk of Night Vale is starting to make Carlos' family worry for his health. And possibly his sanity.
New art, not related to this chapter, but presented for your consideration anyway: Franklin Wilson, Barton Donovan, and Earl Harlan.
( 'For all we know, it is chewing gum! If you were the one who'd almost been killed by breakfast cereal, you'd be nervous around that kind of thing too!' )

Date: 2014-01-26 04:21 am (UTC)The comment about the young pageant actor daemons made me think of something strange. In some of the Daemorphing worldbuilding, I vaguely recall it being stated that lower-budget film productions try to pick actors with daemons that match their role, while higher budget works use camera tricks to portray an appropriate daemon. Does that mean that child actors would be highly prized, since their shapeshifted daemons could be filmed and edited into scenes with another character (or filmed in the same scene with the kid behind a wall or something) more easily than tracking down someone with the right critter, or resorting to CGI and special effects? And one shapeshifting daemon could cover as many roles as needed.
Haha, sorry, this isn't really the appropriate place for this, especially since I've ungratefully been reading and loving the fic without commenting up til now, but the realization just hit me hard and I had to talk about it somewhere.

Date: 2014-01-26 05:35 am (UTC)I feel like low-budget productions wouldn't be able to be picky about what actors they got. If they absolutely had to have a daemon of a different species than the actor's, they'd be more likely to use puppets, or unconvincing costuming.
Child daemons seem like a hard sell, for a couple of reasons. They still have childish voices, so it wouldn't be a get-out-of-editing-free move; you would still have to do some dubbing. They're subject to child labor laws, which limits your filming schedule. And they wouldn't be able to touch the actor whose daemon they're supposedly playing, which cuts into the realism pretty hard.
...and now you've got me wondering about all kinds of things re: acting. What if your child actors' daemons settle mid-series, as something that doesn't fit the character? Does movie!Hermione have a different daemon from book!Hermione? (Not the best example, since HP would just use CGI, but you get the idea.) For a TV series, is a daemon settling the kind of actor-based life event you have to (sometimes awkwardly) write around, like they do with adult actors getting pregnant? How much would it suck if you had a movie half-filmed and then the child actor's daemon settled, and you still had a bunch of scenes to film in which it could shift?
No need to apologize for daemonverse meta! Although I would love to hear more thoughts on the fic at some point =)
