Medium: Television (fancomic)
Fandom: The Daily Show/The Colbert Report
Subject: Fake News Rumble
Title: Good Guys, Bad Guys, And Explosions
Warnings: Large images; spoilers through the Chapter Four preview

A fanmix for the incredibly epic comic Fake News Rumble. In which Dick Cheney is an alien overlord out to destroy the world, and only the superpowered staff of the Daily Show stand in his way.

I've been wanting to draw chibis of these characters for a while now, because their designs (all in the artist's DA gallery) are amazing. Larger versions of the art.

1. Within Temptation | Dark Wings
Starting off with an ominous tone. This song has always made me think of Jon-as-reluctant-hero.

2. Wada Kouji | FIRE!!
From Digimon (translated from the Japanese). An upbeat song to fit Stephen's attitude towards this whole superpowers thing: it's totally awesome.

3. Styx | Captain America
I almost used "America, F@#k Yeah" for this one, but Paul isn't quite that belligerent. So have another song that goes with his shield.

4. Mark Jonathan Davis | Star Wars Cantina
And an outright silly one, to go with Bobby's lightsaber.

5. Sakurakko Club | La Soldier
From Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (translated from the Japanese), for obvious reasons. Sam as high-powered, action-packed Canadian warrior.

6. Local Anxiety | Forgive Us We're Canadian
Jason, meanwhile, doesn't seem too enthusiastic about Canada's taking-over-America plans.

7. Rilo Kiley | Moneymaker
When putting together the tracklist, this was one of the first songs I settled on. Steve and the power of cash.

8. Lupin III | SUPER HERO
From Lupin III. Does this one even need explaining? (Tek and Lupin would get on like two big cats in a small cage.)

9. Culture Club | Time (Clock of the Heart)
A more sober song, for the not-quite-human John and his time-flipping shenanigans.

10. Indigo Girls | Three Hits
I wanted to use a punchy slapstick song for Rob, but some of these lyrics fit so well that I went with it, melancholy and all.

11. 30 Seconds To Mars | Attack
Lewis has only appeared in a couple of panels, but he was frothing at the mouth at the time.

12. Voltaire | When You're Evil
Dick Cheney as evil overlord? Not exactly a surprise. Alternate-universe versions of Jon and Stephen as his minions? Slightly more so.

13. Weird Al Yankovic | Yoda
Tek's mentor really is a tiny, tiny man.

14. Lemon Demon | The Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimate Destiny
The thesis of the series: "Let's throw together everyone we can possibly think of, add shoutouts to everything from Star Wars to Naruto, and stir it into a Battle Royale With Cheese."

...aaawwwwesome.

That epic comic definitely needed an epic fanmix to go with it. *steals*

What is that title font, btw? It's really cool.

The title font is Starshine MF. The text font is Twilight. And they were both free, if you're interested =)

Ahhhhhhh. Yes. That fancomic is fantastic, and this fanmix does it justice! Sam is sexy, and John is unbelievably cute. (Jon's expression frightens me a bit.)

Thank you! Sam is always sexy (I hope Kristen shows up, so I can draw her too). And, really, you think Jon's expression is scary? ...Is it because he looks like he might accidentally blow something up?

Well, he looks petrified, and he's holding an extremely powerful magical bat in his hand. Nervous!Jon + powerful weapon = run for cover.

Wow. I just discovered this comic. I hope the author gets better, cause it's awesome. (As is the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, which is now stuck in my head.)

I would probably have never checked it out if I hadn't seen your hilariously evil Cheney chibi first, so, thanks! ^_^

All those other chibis, and it took the Cheney one to convince you? Tsk!

Glad you like it, though =D

Out of curiosity, and if you don't mind me asking, what method(s) do you use to draw them?

Good old-fashioned pencil and paper to start. I make a sketch, then ink it over with a nice pen. (To get more technical than you will probably care about: I was using Sakura Microns until the local art store stopped carrying them, so now I have a set of Prismacolor Premier fine line markers. Using an 03 for most of the lineart and 01 for the little details, because there's no in-between weight that I can just use for both.)

Scan it, load it up in Paint Shop Pro 7 (a Photoshop competitor that got bought out a few years ago; I should probably learn to use Photoshop one of these days, but I am old and set in my ways), and fill in the colors. The lineart occasionally gets colored too (as with Bobby's lightsaber, or the jewel on Stephen's staff).

Shading goes on a separate layer (using the magic wand tool and "Select similar" to select all the areas of a given color, so the shading doesn't go outside the lines). Liberal use of the smudge tool makes the shading on the hair and a couple of the highlights (like the blade of Sam's hockey stick) smoother. Special shiny bits (the highlights on Jason's rose, Steve's money, Cheney's jewels, and so on) get added on a third layer, set to "Screen".

All of this is done at two to four times the display size, so the whole thing gets resized before being exported as a PNG or JPG. Or, in this case, resized before being copied onto the lyric page files, where I arranged all the text (typed up separately in a Notepad document and copied via Alt+Print Screen) before exporting them.

...any further questions? =P

OH EM GEE YESSSSSS!!!!

I love the way the chibis are a brilliant blend of your style with saturnkitty's, well done! All too awesome to choose favorites, but I am especially drawn to the adorable feistiness that is Sam, and I love Jason's hair (it really does seem to be his most defining feature).

Even better than the chibis though - LEMON DEMON FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jason's hair? Really? You can barely see it...

Sam was one of the hardest - all the tiny colorful details took for-freakin'-ever to draw. But it was all fun :D

a;lskdjf this makes me so happy. (And I've hardly even read any of the comic! I should get on that.) Much love for the chibis, especially John Oliver; he looks adorably Harry Potter-esque.

I love this comic so hard and you making a fanmic (plus chibis) is like a dream come true. Also LOL~ at song choices for Dick. When You're Evil is a perfect match.
