Mix - Fake News: The Last Wørd
Title: The Last Wørd
Fandom: The Colbert Report
Rating: PG
Pairings: None. (Maybe a touch of "Stephen"/Jon if you look at the full lyrics.)
For the theme "Cancelled TV Shows" over at
fanmix, a mix for the (someday, inevitable) end of TCR.
Stephen honestly believes that The Colbert Report can fix everything he thinks is wrong with the world. When the show gets cancelled and the world carries on, it'll break his heart.
(But that, too, will pass.)
1) Peter Gabriel - "Big Time" [Stephen]
Stephen always knew he was going to do something big.
I'm getting out
To the city, the big big city
I'll be a big noise with all the big boys
So much stuff I will own
And I will pray to a big God
As I kneel in the big church
(Big time)
I'm on my way, I'm making it
(Big time)
I've got to make it show
(Big time)
So much larger than life
(Big time)
I'm gonna watch it growing
...And my Heaven will be a big Heaven
2) Styx - "Fooling Yourself" [to Stephen]
So he sets out out to change the world. If he shouts loud enough, he can do it, right?
You see the world through your cynical eyes
You're a troubled young man, I can tell
You've got it all in the palm of your hand
But your hand's wet with sweat
And your head needs a rest
And you're fooling yourself if you don't believe it
You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it
How can you be such an angry young man
When your future looks quite bright to me...
Get up!
Get back on your feet
You're the one they can't beat and you know it
Come on, let's see what you've got
Just take your best shot and don't blow it
3) Evanescence - "Weight of the World" [Stephen]
Changing the world, like changing himself, takes more effort than Stephen expected. It starts to wear him down.
Feels like the weight of the world
Like God in Heaven gave me a turn
Don't cling to me, I swear I can't fix you
Still in the dark, can you fix me?
Freefall, freefall, all through life
If you love me, then let go of me
I won't be held down by who I used to be
She's nothing to me
4) Anthony Rapp - "Room to Breathe" [Jon, to Stephen]
Jon sees that Stephen is being smothered, but he can't suggest that Stephen give up the worship of his fan base; Stephen will just see it as a jealous attack. All Jon can do is wait for the fall.
There was barely room to breathe
Getting this skeptic to believe
That the goal wasn't to leave
One of us broken...
I watch them orbiting around you now
Just like you showed them how
And you reach out like the hand of God
A tap will keep them spinning
If it's true they flock to you
Without your shepherd’s call
For change just let them range
And see how far you fall
Your star is due for shooting
And I'll be watching the night sky
5) Muse - "Shrinking Universe" [to Stephen]
As Stephen burns out, the show's ratings begin to decline, to the point where even the most spectacular end would make very little difference.
Can't you see it's over
Because you're the God of a shrinking universe
Purposeless survival
Now there's nothing left to die for
6) Billy Joel - "Famous Last Words" [Stephen]
The last episode of the show into which Stephen poured his whole life. He tries to have a positive attitude, as he always does, but forced apathy is the best he can manage.
And these are the last words I have to say
Before another age goes by
With all those other songs I'll have to play
But that's the story of my life
And it's so clear standing here where I am
Ain't that what justice is for?
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn anymore
7) The Magnetic Fields - "I Don't Really Love You Anymore" [the Colbert Nation, to Stephen]
The diehard remnants of the fan base, feeling bitter and abandoned, deny that they would still do anything for Stephen.
True, I'd give my right arm
To keep you safe from harm
And true, for you, I'd move to Ecuador
And I'd keep a little farm
Chop wood to keep you warm
But I don't really love you anymore
I don't have to love you now if I don't wish to
I won't see you anyhow if that's an issue
Because I am a gentleman
Think of me as just your fan
Who remembers every dress you ever wore
8) Kansas - "Dust In The Wind" [Stephen]
With the show gone, Stephen goes into a tailspin of depression: if all of his achievements didn't have the big effect he anticipated, maybe they didn't mean anything at all.
I close my eyes
Only for a moment and the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind...
Don't hang on
Nothing last forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
9) Imogen Heap, "Clear The Area" [Jon, to Stephen]
As Stephen comes crashing down from his decade-long high, Jon - who already went through this, and knows how to handle it - is ready for him.
But your eyes tell a whole other story
And I feel the weight of the world.
You won’t talk
You won’t try
Just move:
It’s too still in your sadness
Cry
Give up
It’s okay
You’ve just got to trust me
You find your way back down
And I’ll keep the area clear
(Please clear the area)
When you find your way back down
In one piece
Then I’ll just be waiting here
(Right here)
10) They Might Be Giants - "The End Of The Tour" [Stephen, to Jon]
The glitter and flash of the set has faded to the much less exciting reality. But Jon is still here, and with their shows gone Stephen no longer feels the need to compete with him.
At the end of the tour
When the road disappears
If there's any more people around
When the tour runs aground
And if you're still around
Then we'll meet at the end of the tour
The engagements are booked through the end of the world
So we'll meet at the end of the tour
And we're never gonna tour again
No, we're never gonna tour again
11) Damone - "Now Is The Time" [Jon, to Stephen]
Jon helps Stephen comes to terms with his loss, let the show go, and heal. Besides, even though it wasn't as world-changing as Stephen hoped, it was still fantastic, and he wouldn't have traded it for the world.
I can put your pieces back together,
While I take the rest of you apart
I didn't think my luck would last forever,
But I think right here is where we'll start
When the lines of the past have been blurred it gets much easier
To tell those around to let go
Now is the time when we find out what's really happening
How was the ride of your life?
