I picture him being ahead of the curve on trans-specific issues, but still having some strict gender-role views otherwise. Like, he wouldn't tell a trans woman to "wash off the makeup and stop pretending", but he might easily say to her "That's enough, honey, the men are talking now." Because if women really can do anything men can do, that implies (according to Stephen-logic) that he has no reason to identify as male, rather than as a woman who just happens to have a lot of "masculine" traits.
...I don't think he deals with intersex/genderqueer people very well. "Are you male or female? Pick a side! We're at war!"
