Your use of metaphor is totally fitting. (Er, no pun intended.) Seamus has kept himself together pretty much by sheer force of will. It works as a cheap fix, but it falls apart easily. Now he's trying to put a little finesse in it, to make something with quality that will last.
George has been so much fun. As have the parents - they've gotten wiser and more mellowed, especially in Stephen's case, but are no less entertaining for it.
