That sounds like pitch-perfect Stephen logic. (In my mind, left alone he beats himself up about it. I've been mulling over a Formidable Opponent on the subject. And I'm certain that a lot of his anger at the world in general is a channeling of his anger at himself.) On top of that, there's an element of "gay sex is bad from the start; once I've given in to being bad, it doesn't matter how rough/dirty/unhealthy it gets from there."
And once he loses the motivation to take care of himself, that opens the door for Jon to come in.
