I'm gay, so even though I've been lucky enough not to feel a lot of direct pressure (cool parents, progressive school, spending most of my free time on the Internet), the idea of my sexuality being wrong is very present for me. I recommend Jim McGreevey's The Confession. He's learned all the academic psychological terms for assorted aspects of shame about sexuality, but he goes on to describe them in a way that really resonates. They resonated with me, and I had a relatively miniscule time of being in the closet. (But he's also close to Stephen's age and a faithful Catholic.)
