The polite young voice at the other end of the line was most definitely not Evelyn. But it was anxious, and Jon's paternal instincts hit his own anxiety on the back of the head with a blunt object, dumped it in a secluded corner of his brain, and took control.
And once again: I love Jon Stewart. Or the Jon you write. No, I'm pretty sure I love Jon Stewart :) But that line made me love the idea of him just a little bit more. I don't have kids; but it's what you do when one is in trouble, or one of your wards, or your friends. Everything else just stops - and you move forward, and deal. I also like that he has no trouble at all recalling Stephen's kids' names. And that he knows how important it is to know which one of them he's talking to. I love that he explains the media to them - so carefully! - and that he sides with the kids instead of lumping himself and Evelyn together as parental units; that his compassion over-rides his propriety, or rather, society's. That, I think, is a central Jon trait.
And...I'm using the word 'compassion' rather a lot. Hmm. *puts word to one side for percolating*
The intros to the Report were helplessly endearing, I don't know if that was you or the show, but they really were. Pizza! And Jon's dismay over being out-punned. How much do I love that you've enabled me to coin 'out-punned'? Almost as much as I love Jon for speaking it.
Jon second-guessing himself over Stephen's health was a nice touch, as was Stephen rising and offering to show him where the bathroom is - I can't decide whether to make a joke here about Larry Craig or just comment that it was very gentlemanly of him. And not done for the sake of manners, either, I don't think - it's quite clear that he just doesn't think about it. Even with the exchange that follows it, where he gets all proprietry - I read that as not wanting to be in Jon's shadow, and the studio/the show being so very much his, so very personal. Also there's the chance to mess with Jon, which must be fun ;) Made me laugh again.
Stephen making Jon memorise the number for Moreau - hypochondria or paranoia? - actually, for all his wild imagination ("or all the data gets erased by a giant electromagnet. It could happen, Jon!"), that's something I might do. If it were for something I cared enough about. Hmm. And it ties in wonderfully to Moreau informing Jon that she told Stephen only to give it to those he trusted with his life. There's a parallel there.
