The cheesy, sparkly appearance of the tween music industry, with all the angst and dark secrets underneath, turned out to make it the perfect fit for an AU "Stephen." Add in Olivia's fraught relationship with public image, and Jon's thing with media criticism...and the rest of the characters get to come along just to be themselves, albeit as singing teenagers.

I needed more characters than the fake-news family alone could provide, and Olivia was the best part of The Newsroom, so that worked out well =)
