This is not a particularly duplicitous version of Stephen. He just uses that handle because he wants to be a beautiful princess, and loves unicorns.
Sam started on TDS in 2001. I don't know the exact date, so it might have been later than September, but even if so this isn't too far off from canon.
Somehow I can't see "Stephen" ever being a huge hit with mature people ^_^; The impression I'm trying to give is that this TDS has a lot of elements found in our TCR, with the fast-paced visuals, broad use of props, and self-important poorly-informed host. But with Jon as head writer, it also has a strong editorial voice pushing the views and interests of our TDS. (There will be clashing about this eventually.) And of course the correspondents are all the same people with appeal to similar audiences, even if host!Stephen deals with them differently than host!Jon would.
College-age viewers aren't illiterate -- if it's funny, they're not going to be turned off just because sometimes it's in writing. People are still tuning into our TCR while Esteban Colberto is subtitled, and The Wørd is all about nonverbal reactions to the host. As long as Jon isn't on more than those two elements put together (and since he's only one correspondent of several, that's not a risk), he's in no danger of losing people's interest.
The "hiring production people with real-news experience" idea is exactly what our TDS and TCR do. They're still doing the usual satirical/fake news content here, never fear =)
