Huh. After escaping part 3 with the scene at the vet's without mentioning Lorraine I thought I had escaped a revisiting of my least favorite scene of State of Grace (not because it's bad, if anything because it's too good, too starkly painful). After reading this small bit of Lorraine and Jon's interaction I actually find myself wanting to know in more detail what happened in this 'verse that she walked in on (was Sweetness fronting or did Stephen in his anguish lash out at Avi the way he did at Jon in the original SoG?). And to go back to Part 3 for a moment, relating Gipper's death to the loss of Shasta was a stroke of (painful) genius.
"—I'm real!" I shouted, the earth wet and squelchy but solid against my feet. "I'm real, and I'm your Stephen, and I love you!"
The figure bolted down the steps and shot out into the rain, so quick that she wasn't even damp when she crashed into my arms.
I really love the way the daemons fit perfectly into the story that SoG already tells, and this scene is a perfect example of making it even better. A literal representation of Stephen getting a part of his soul back :') The climactic scene of SoG was already wonderful, but the reunion with Shasta and the flickering of the system's daemons is a scene of pure ecstasy!
Read the two versions of "Jon Full Of Grace" together and was pleased by how seamlessly this new version incorporates the daemons to tell the same story - particularly the bit where Avi "laughed like a sunrise" at the end instead of Jon (because it's not really instead of, it's still Jon <3).
And this Epilogues is so completely wonderful, I went back and realized that I somehow failed to read SoG's original Epilogue! ::facepalm:: I will have to go back later and leave detailed feedback for that piece of glory (and hush, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't leave good feedback as promised, I do what I can 9_9) when I am home from vacation.
