Stephen mostly just fumbles small points of grammar. For Olivia, I figured that when a person from the country of geeks attempts to speak normally, the best they can manage is lolcat.
Personally I'm a child of the '90s, but I've had enough exposure to '80s geek nostalgia to laugh at -- and repeat -- all the jokes XD (The most recent riff I heard on the princess-in-another-castle line was in an episode of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/watchtheguild>The Guild</a>.) It doesn't take encyclopedic background knowledge to write a story like this; all you have to do is sprinkle in references to the areas you know, and let readers' imaginations fill in the rest.
