Mix - Fake News: You Have Restored Mine

Medium: Television
Fandom: The Daily Show/The Colbert Report
Subject: The Rally to Restore Sanity And/Or Fear
Title: You Have Restored Mine

This was going to be a Jon-and-Stephen-at-the-Rally mix, and it ended up turning into a Jon's-speech-at-the-end mix. Which, since I mostly do Stephen mixes the rest of the time, seemed fair. Title and all quotations are from said speech, with help from this transcription.

(And yes, it does open with a Spice Girls song. Don't judge me.)

And now I thought we might have a moment, however brief, for some sincerity. If that's okay. I know there are boundaries for a comedian-pundit-talker-guy, and I'm sure I'll find out tomorrow how I have violated them.

The Spice Girls | Say You'll Be There
I know that many of you made a great effort to be here today, and I want you to know that everyone involved with this project worked incredibly hard to make sure we honored the effort that you put in, and gave you the best show that we could possibly do.

I'm giving you everything
All that joy can bring
This I swear
(I'll give you everything)
And all that I want from you
Is a promise you will be there

Sarah McLachlan | World On Fire
This was not a rally...to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times.

Hearts break, hearts mend
Love still hurts
Visions clash, planes crash
Still there's talk of
Saving souls, still the cold
Is closing in on us...

The world's on fire
It's more than I can handle
Tap into the water
Try to bring my share
Try to bring more
More than I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am able

They Might Be Giants | Man, It's So Loud In Here
If we amplify everything, we hear nothing.

Baby check this out, I've got something to say
Man it's so loud in here
When they stop the drum machine and I can think again
I'll remember what it was

They're all shouting something at us, waving and pointing
They revamped the airport completely
Now it looks just like a nightclub
Everyone's excited and confused

Buffalo Springfield | For What It's Worth
If the picture of us were true, of course, our inability to solve problems would actually be quite sane and reasonable. Why would you work with Marxists actively subverting our Constitution, or racists and homophobes who see no one’s humanity but their own?

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware...

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

Journey | Every Generation
And yet, with that being said, I feel good—strangely, calmly good. Because the image of Americans that is reflected back to us by our political and media process is false.

While the radio's still playin'
That familiar sweet love song
We still share the same desire
We all need to belong

Turn around and face the change
Young hearts all beat the same
The fire in the soul remains
Ooh in every generation
Young rebels have their time
Glory days are gonna shine
Ooh there's a brand new face waiting right behind
Every generation

Roy Zimmerman | I Am A Moderate
Most Americans don’t live their lives solely as Democrats, Republicans, liberals or conservatives. Americans live their lives more as people that are just a little bit late for something they have to do. Often something that they do not want to do—but they do it: impossible things every day that are only made possible by the little reasonable compromises that we all make.

I know the critical political decisions of our time
Will be made right in the middle of the masses

I am a moderate!
I hold my head up - not too high
For when democracy runs dry, who's gonna water it?
Who but a moderate
Such as I?

We must have two wings, like the eagle
And two purposes, like the spork
And be flexible yet rugged, like the willow
I am nonpartisan; my heart is in the middle of the road
Neither elephant nor donkey - I'm a dead armadillo!

I am a moderate!
I want my half a day in the sun!
For when the Nation comes undone, who's gonna solder it?
Who but a moderate
Makes us one?

Journey | Faith In The Heartland
You go. Then I’ll go. You go. Then I’ll go. You go then I’ll go. Oh my God, is that an NRA sticker on your car? Is that an Obama sticker on your car? Well, that’s okay—you go and then I’ll go.

He goes to work in a brand new dawn
With the early morning sunrise
He's got his dream and he's holding on
It's getting harder every day

He loves a girl who speaks her mind
Don't always look at life the same way
Sharing truth that will heal in time...

They want to believe something real
Still they're searching
They're keeping the faith in the heartland tonight
Ooh, it's words that divide them
It's love that defines them
They're keeping the faith in the heartland tonight

Bruce Springsteen | Radio Nowhere
The truth is, there will always be darkness. And sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t the promised land. Sometimes it’s just New Jersey.

I was staring at a dead dial
Just another lost number in a file
Dancing down a dark hole
Just searching for a world with some soul...

I want a thousand guitars
I want pounding drums
I want a million different voices speaking in tongues

This is radio nowhere
Is there anybody alive out there?
This is radio nowhere
Is there anybody alive out there?
Is there anybody alive out there?

I was driving through the misty rain
And just searching for a mystery train
Bopping through the wild blue
Trying to make a connection with you

Sarah Brightman | Shall Be Done
But we do it anyway. Together.

I have seen
New times have come, to feel in touch
With what is real
The mission's calling each one of us
One blue sky
For us to share, for us to fly...

You're a star
You are the future that travels far
Touch and bring
Millions of hearts to share and sing
Hopes are high
A new beginning for you and I

Ideas for a world to come
Shall be done, done, done, done
Ideas for a world to come
Shall be done, done, done, done
Done, done, done

And on and on we will go on
Until we master our desire
To make this world
A better place

Sanity will always be and has always been in the eye of the beholder. To see you here today and the kind of people that you are has restored mine. Thank you.

Bonus | Whitest Kids U' Know | Totally Gay For America

I'd gladly bend down and take Florida in my mouth.
I'd tongue kiss Mount Rushmore
And drop my pants to my waist
Then take the Washington Monument all the way to its base

There ain't a lot of things that make me feel this way
But this country of mine
Makes me totally gay

Bonus | Auto-Tune The News | Sanity Song

We hear every damn day
About our fragile country
Every damn day
How it's on the brink of catastrophe
And how it's a shame
That we can't work together
The truth is, we do
We work together to get things done
Every damn day
Every damn day
We work together every damn day
