Thanks! I finally wrote a real story with these two, and I embraced both the angst and absurdism while having a great time.
he's noticing that these two men have specific features in common
OHHH, okay, so 1999 and 2010 aren't part of the same "it's all true" continuity? Ahh, I see what you were doing--two different ways it could have been true--one where Jon is the same Jon, and one where he isn't.
I'm going to have to look up the Tales of Hoffmann now, because it sounds fascinating.
It has genderqueer themes in it, too--his male friend throughout the story turns out to have been, the whole time, either his female muse, or his new female partner. In other words, it's sort of trannyfag-ish in its ending--according to one interpretation. If I write up an essay about this, I will link you to it.
Stephen processes reality in strange ways -- he can't always separate the facts from his own filters.
That was a good way of putting that.
I'm gonna have to cartoon something about this, I know that much....
Good, because you are SO GOOD that it must be done! ~_^ (I still want to do that commission... but things are being tight at the moment. Let's see how much commission I get on my next check. Blah.)
