If The Daily/Report Crew Were In Fandom...
Originally posted in this FFA thread: Pretend the characters from your fandom were also members of fandom (in general, not necessarily their own fandom). Who would be the BNFs? Who writes the pretentious intellislash, who churns out the badfic filled with SPAG errors, who's got the most fills on the kink meme? Who are the biggest wankers and SJWs?
Slightly revised and expanded. Totally open to suggestions/requests for more =) As a setup for fic and such, the premise is free to anyone who wants to play with it.
"Stephen" is a gloriously wanky SF/F BNF (with a generous side helping of Glee). Every fandom debate that comes around, he's there to make a poorly-informed but lengthy post on; most people who follow him are doing so for the popcorn value. He regularly wades into the comments of m/m and f/f stories to harass the writers about how their shipping is disrespectful to canon, although by now everyone's seen the screencaps of his anonfail panting over a searingly explicit BDSM-themed m/m kink meme fill. Begs his flist for money every time he gets a sprain and/or wants a new iPad.
He writes epic hurt/comfort series that people adore for their imagination and emo-porn, even though the plots don't make much sense and it's ridiculous how quickly the heroes level up. (At least his Lord of the Rings fic is always impeccably researched.) They include a lot of tab-A-slot-B het sex scenes, which a lot of readers in turn skip right over, the better to get back to the delicious subtext between the male lead and his sidekick.
Jon keeps thinking about dialing down his fandom responsibilities, and keeps ending up as the mod of more and more things anyway. He rants a lot under flock. Outside his own fandoms he's best-known for a perfectly articulated smackdown he laid down on a particularly nasty move by TPTB that got linked around everywhere...except in SJW circles, where any mention of him leads to people bringing up That Possibly Ill-Advised Thing He Said That One Time, as well as the fact that he has "Stephen" on his flist (and has been known to do SPAG betas for him).
He writes gen adventure stories for Star Wars and DC Comics; nothing earth-shattering, but consistently funny. Secretly lurks around Springsteen RPF. Has an extensive GIF folder, and an uncanny ability to produce the perfect reaction shot the instant it's necessary.
Larry made a couple of serious posts during Racefail. These days, he has a lot of fun gently trolling insecure-and-overcompensating white fans, though he puts together serious rec posts for COC-centric fanworks. Co-mods a few things with Jon.
Sam is a dedicated troll who avoids capital letters like the plague. She also hangs on a lot of kink memes and posts extreme, creative, disturbing prompts, any one of which may or may not be trolling. Fights have broken out over whether to leave them up.
Jason writes the creepy kind of male-gaze-y het and femslash porn, which his wife assures him is totally realistic. He also has a YouTube channel for his loud and belligerent reviews of video games. In costume.
Aasif is a brony. He stans for the headscarf-wearing version of human!Fluttershy, and has started to write a few tentative MLP one-shots (Olivia betas). Aside from that he mostly hangs out on forums, where he snarks about racism in fandom sometimes, but also snarks on common social justice rhetoric and sometimes makes eyerolly "oh good grief, I'm a ~person of color~ and I think the casting of The Last Airbender was no big deal" type posts.
Olivia is in a bunch of RPs, especially big multifandom ones, and has cosplayed most of the characters she plays. Deleted her Tumblr account after getting attacked by a bunch of SJWs for using the word "bitch"; these days, sticks to posting pro-actual-social-justice links on her LJ. Anonymously, she writes a ton of searingly hot porn in all combinations of genders, including that kink meme fill "Stephen" anonfailed on.
Kristen does eccentric but eyecatching illustrative-style fanart, and leaves prompts and recs in all the female-character-centric fests. Mostly into het and femslash, though she's willing to beta Olivia's slashfics.
John Hodgman has answered half the posts on LITTLE_DETAILS, and written a bunch of Guide To X For Fanfic Writers essays, which are VERY READABLE as long as you can get past the WEIRD CAPITALIZATION. On the other hand, he hangs out on FFA and leaves a lot of NONSENSE ANSWERS to SURVEY THREADS. (Odds are good that he is also FUNGUS NONNIE.) Vocal about how completely he DOES NOT UNDERSTAND TUMBLR. He's in a bunch of TINY OBSCURE FANDOMS, although his longest fic was from a round of Apocalypse Big Bang, where his gritty, SCIENTIFICALLY PRECISE, incredibly detailed and absorbing 90K-word My Little Pony apocafic COMPLETELY BLINDSIDED everyone who read it.
Speaking of FFA, Lewis has a brand-new multi-paragraph rant for every Dear Flister thread. Used to love mocking stuff at scans_daily; he's been banned from its current incarnation for refusing to give up the word "lame."
Jessica leaves enthusiastic comments on everything. She's that new arrival who hasn't quite got the hang of online tone yet, and heaps on praise and exclamation points to an uncomfortable degree. On the other hand, her Tumblr has amazing artistic GIFs, and she finds all the best stuff to reblog.
John Oliver makes a new post at fanficrants every time he finds an error in a fic set in the UK. They have a mod tag about him. He has a Tumblr full of picspams, and is an active and well-respected podficcer of fics in British fandoms (he also posts a lot on fanficrants about how American readers butcher Harry Potter podfics).
He and Wyatt are responsible for a lot of FFA's countrywank. Wyatt is constantly making wide-eyed posts along the lines of "Here's the thing, you gotta understand -- the US is really diverse, you know?" And every single one makes John spitting mad all over again.
Wyatt also got famous for writing that story last Yuletide. You know. The one with the porcupine.
And a sequel, posted in another thread: If the characters in your fandom had access to the internet and plenty of time to goof around on messageboards, what would they wank about?
A short and emphatically non-exhaustive list of things "Stephen" gets into fandom wanks about:
How disrespectful it is to write [any two male characters] as a couple -- can't you see that their bond is pure and true heterosexual friendship?
People who get even the most minor and obscure Silmarillion and/or LotR Appendices details wrong, and how they are clearly not True Fans.
Religion.
How he doesn't see race.
How he doesn't see species. ("Are you a velociraptor? Because I can't tell.")
How disrespectful it is to interpret those stories he wrote about [any two male characters] cuddling, sharing a bed, being each other's emotional rock and only true confidante, laughing together, crying together, bathing together, deciding to spend the rest of their lives together, etc., as anything more than pure and true heterosexual friendship.
Which pony is the best pony.
The oppression of objectumsexuality, and the discrimination he and his life partner Sweetness face in their objectumsexual relationship. Where's all the outrage about that in the social justice community, huh? Get on it, SJWs.
Why he deserves to win every fandom contest he hears about. Even if he didn't enter. Even if it's for a fandom he's not in.
Nutmeg.

...Every time John Oliver makes a rant about stupid Americanisms, Andy Zaltzmann pops up to point out all of the Americanisms that Oliver accidentally used in his rant and recent podfics, because after all he's basically American at this point anyway. He and Oliver also beta for each other and occasionally co-write when they do fic at all, and he RPs in politics RPF fandom, and writes for Yuletide every year (and Purimgifts, if John reminds him when it is), but pretty much lurks other than that.
(Oliver writes fic for Yuletide too. He wrote that one fic with the Smurfs going to New York City - you know the one, it got on BoingBoing - which still gets linked all the time.)
...you can probably tell how I've been getting most of my fake news lately.
