The premise is so potentially twisted, but I tried to go for a sweet ending =)

In the novel, we know the hero has been broken when he begs for his torturers to turn their attacks on his girlfriend instead: "Do it to Julia!" So Chuck gets...surprising points for selflessness here, actually.
