The Vortex.
Stephen Col-bert is 17.

"He can't talk to me," said Stephen out loud. "At least, not a lot. It's not my fault. The whole timeline's at stake. It's nothing to do with me."

As there was no other audience in the room, he was addressing his reflection in the full-length mirror. Problem was, the Stephen in the mirror didn't look convinced. "And what if it isn't? What if I'm just not good enough to talk to?"

"Okay, first of all, I am," said Stephen firmly. "And second of all, shut up."

The debate thus settled, he strode over to the armchair. He could polish his rhetorical techniques later. Right now there was a Tolkien novel that needed reading.

Stephen was halfway through the first chapter of The Children of Húrin when he realized his mind was wandering.

For some reason, this felt more sacreligious than the fact that he hadn't been to confession in weeks. It was Tolkien! What's more, it was new Tolkien, something he had never seen before, and yet the words had all the texture and richness of a proper legend of Middle-earth. How dare he not appreciate it?

Once he had set the book reverently down on the end table (because he was going to respect it, even if he couldn't give it the focus it deserved), Stephen threw himself down on his bed in a huff.

As he rolled over, his eye fell on the Delphon-English dictionary.

Oh, man. That may be my favourite line ever. I understand why you cut them, but it's cool to get to see them anyway.

Ah, Stephen. I can always count on you for your nuanced, well thought out, and reasoned debating. =P

Very nice!

He was a bit of a prodigy - he had it mastered at the age of two.

Thanks!
